ROYAL recognition has been given to four local people in the Queen's birthday honours list.
East Hardwick stalwart Gordon Spurdens (pictured) has been awarded the MBE for services to the community.
The 76-year-old farmer, of Darrington Road, has taken part in the village's parish council, the church council, and been involved in hundreds of village events and shows.
He said: "It was a great surprise. I have no idea who nominated me, but it is really nice to know I am appreciated by the people of the village."
Pontefract Prince of Wales hospice volunteer Jean Riley, of Carleton Park Avenue, almost missed the deadline to accept her MBE as the letter arrived when she was on holiday.
She said: "When we got home there was a message on our answerphone from someone in Downing Street. They sounded pretty panicky because they hadn't heard anything from me. It was a lovely surprise to come home to."
Mrs Riley, 58, a civil servant, has volunteered for the hospice for ten years, beginning as a receptionist and going on to advise patients on matters such as claiming benefit. She has also helped the hospice's bereavement support group. She was nominated for the honour by colleagues.
And Ackworth GP Elizabeth Moulton, of the College Lane Surgery was also rewarded with the MBE for her dedicated work as a GP, a government health adviser and also in her work as associate director of the Yorkshire Deanery in training new GPs. She said she was delighted, adding: "I want to thank my family and my partners at the practice. My husband and three sons have been incredibly supportive, and I also want to say what wonderful partners and staff I have at the surgery."
And Castleford-born Nina Wrightson, who now lives in Church Fenton, was awarded the OBE for her services to occupational health and safety. Mrs Wrightson, 52, the director of risk management at Northern Foods, has devoted most of the last 25 years to health and safety at work as both government adviser and volunteer.
