Hospital compensation payment figures revealed

NEW figures reveal the NHS has paid out almost £8.2m in negligence claims to patients at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust in the space of three years.
The NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) dealt with claims from 168 patients at the trust's sites in Pontefract, Wakefield and Dewsbury between June 2005 and May 31 this year – with the total bill, including lawyers' fees, reaching £12.3m.
The figures, disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act, show 68 claims were made by surgery patients.
The trust also received 76 claims from employees.
The money is paid out by the NHSLA, into which each trust in the country pays a sum every year to cover costs.
Tracey McErlain-Burns, chief nurse and director of patient experience at the trust, said the claims accounted for less than 0.01 per cent of the patients cared for during the period.
She added: "We take all complaints and claims made by patients extremely seriously.
"We always make every effort to learn from them so that we can take action or make improvements to minimise the risk of something similar happening again."
