FEATHERSTONE Town Council's clerk has been suspended.
The Express understands Richard Fogden was suspended on full pay by a committee of the authority last week but he, and town councillors, have remained silent on the reasons why.

When contacted Mr Fogden, of Pontefract, confirmed he had been suspended but would not say why.

He added: "That's all I am going to say, I'm sure it will be sorted out."

Mr Fogden started work at Featherstone Town Council last year.

Rumours of his suspension have been circulating in the town and it was referred to at the council's meeting last Wednesday when resident John Jackson shouted from the public gallery: "Why has the town clerk been suspended?"

The Express could not reach council leader Dave Herrington for comment and Mayor of Featherstone Roy Bickerton said he could not speak about the suspension.

He added: "It will all come out in the wash."

It is believed that a hearing for Mr Fogden has been scheduled.

An acting clerk has not been appointed at the council, which is based at Featherstone Town Hall on Wakefield Road, but councillors are opening the building for various services.
