Miscarriage mix-up misery

DEVASTATED mum Tracy Norris is calling for new checks after a hospital mix-up over the sex of her miscarried baby.
Care worker Tracy grieved for 11 months for her little boy Alfie, stillborn at 14 weeks at Pontefract General Infirmary on July 27 last year, before new tests last month showed she had actually given birth to a daughter.
Tracy, who also has an eight-year-old daughter, said: "My baby was buried as a boy – a student nurse told me the sex and I mourned for a son for a year.
"I've had three miscarriages in three years so I went for tests to try to pinpoint the problem. When I asked if I couldn't carry boys my doctor said my reports said I had a girl.
"New cell tests had to be sent off and they showed only female chromosomes. I still can't believe it."
Tracy, 28, of Jardine Avenue, Featherstone, wants to stop the mistake happening again and has made an official complaint to Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust – which runs PGI.
She added: "Doctors at PGI have told me they let parents choose the sex of miscarried babies but hospitals should do tests every time to find out.
"There's nobody to blame but I'm angry at the lack of communication.
"I've heard this mistake has happened to other women but nothing has changed.
"Without further tests I might never have found this out – I won't let it lie."
Tracey McErlain-Burns, chief nurse and director of patient experience at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said hospital chiefs would meet Tracy when investigations into her complaint were completed.
She added: "The loss of a child during pregnancy is tragic and I express sincere sympathies to Miss Norris.
"We do everything we can to support any parent going through this experience in hospital and I am very concerned to hear that Miss Norris may have been misinformed about her baby's sex. I am very sorry for any additional distress this has caused."
