MUSICAL groups in Castleford hit the high notes during a glittering awards evening to celebrate unsung arts heroes from across the district.
Marjorie Stoker, president of Castleford Choral Society and Castleford Gilbert and Sullivan Society, was given a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award and Castleford Young Musicians was crowned Voluntary Arts Group of the Year at the spectacular gala to mark the tenth birthday of development agency DIVA.
Kath Sloan, secretary of Castleford Choral Society, said: “We are absolutely thrilled and delighted that Marjorie has won this award an we are extremely proud of her.
“She has dedicated her life to music and we as a society owe her a lot. She is incredibly hard working and deserves this recognition.”
Ralph Jaggar, choir director of Castleford Young Musicians, said that members of the popular group were thrilled to win their first award in their 40-year history.
He added: “We knew we had been nominated but didn’t know we had won. It was an incredible feeling to receieve the award. We are all over the moon.”
The DIVA gala awards evening, which attracted hundreds of people from arts groups across the district, was compered by Featherstone television presenter and writer Ian Clayton.
