TWO post offices in the district have been earmarked for closure in the government's latest cull.

Pontefract's Hardwick Road branch on Maple Drive and the Pontefract Road outlet in Castleford join four more post offices in Wakefield set for the axe in an announcement released by Royal Mail on Tuesday.

The hitlist is the first in a renewed wave of closure plans to shut more than 2,500 post offices nationwide.

Hundreds of townsolk threw their weight behind a campaign, led by Pontefract Conservative councillors Geoff Walsh and Phillip Booth, to save a possible ten post offices in the Five Towns.

Residents, councils and businesses now have six weeks to object to closures, which bosses blame on rising losses and dwindling customers.

Those that are chosen to close will start to shut from July.
