Remembrance services across the Five Towns

REMEMBRANCE services will honour fallen heroes across the Five Towns this week.
Hundreds will join silences, lay wreaths and remember those who died in conflict, at services on Sunday, November 8, and Wednesday, November 11, Armistice Day.

On Sunday in Pontefract a procession will leave the town hall at 10.45am and make its way to the war memorial on Cornmarket for a short ceremony before continuing to a service in St Giles' Church.

Veterans will gather outside Castleford's Royal British Legion Club on Powell Street from 10.30am, with a service from 10.50am, before a parade marches to All Saints' Church for a full remembrance service at 11.30am.

In Knottingley residents can meet at the war memorial on Aire Street from 10.30am for a service, with refreshments in the town hall afterwards.

St Andrew's Church in Ferrybridge is holding a eucharist at 9.45am and worshippers will leave at 10.45am to attend a ceremony at the war memorial on High Street.

Silence will fall in Featherstone as a parade leaves Featherstone Hotel to arrive at the new war memorial and gardens on Station Lane at 10.55am for a full service.

At 11.15am the procession will march down Station Lane to the war memorial at St Thomas's Church to repeat the service before continuing to Girnhill Lane WMC for dismissal at 11.40am.

Streethouse villagers can honour the war dead with a service at the memorial on Whinney Lane at 11am and in Ackworth a remembrance service is to take place at St Cuthbert's Church from 10.50am.

A remembrance service takes place at Allerton Bywater Methodist Church at 10.15am, followed by an act of remembrance at the war memorial at 10.45am.

Two church services will take place in Kippax at 10.30am, one at St Mary's Church and the second at Kippax Methodist Church.

Both congregations will be joined by scouts and guides to form a parade on Chapel Lane, along High Street and Longdyke Lane to reach the war memorial on Longdyke Lane at noon.

They will then reform the parade back along High Street to the ex-servicemen's club on Church Lane for dismissal.

The Normanton, Altofts and Whitwood Royal British Legion are leading a parade to the war memorial in Haw Hill Park for a service there from 10.30am.

A two-minute silence will take place at 11am before the procession continues to Altofts cemetery for 11.30am.

On Wednesday November 11 services and silences are also taking place at the war memorials in Pontefract, Featherstone and Ackworth at 11am.
