CULINARY wizards have whipped up tasty delights on board a cooking bus at Featherstone's St Wilfrid's Catholic High School this week.
Expert cooks taught students, with youngsters from other schools, how to make fresh dishes with the themes of high energy food for sports, healthy desserts, seasonal ingredients and cooking on a budget in preparation for university.

Delicious opti
ons on the menu included coconut fish curry, pear and parmesan crisp salad or curried parsnip soup.

Kevin Walsh, deputy headteacher at the Cutsyke Road school, said: “Cooking on the bus has been going down very well.

“Sixth form students preparing for university have created healthy, cheap meals using quality, healthy ingredients and adults in our allotment group have taken part to involve the North Featherstone community.

“Healthy food is a priority in school and one thing we are focusing is food sourcing – our beef and lamb is farm assured and our eggs are free range.”

St Wilfrid’s is a flagship school in the Food For Life partnership, which runs the cooking bus with the Focus on Food campaign to teach children about healthy diets and combat childhood obesity.

Mr Walsh added: “We are the only secondary in Yorkshire and Humberside to be a flagship school with the partnership, which means we have made significant improvements to the food culture we provide.

“Our aim is to serve 30 per cent organic food and 70 per cent locally sourced food.”
