THEATRE enthusiast Victor Carter had royal high hopes when he invited the Queen to attend Kippax Amateur Operatic Society’s summer production of Oklahoma!
Mr Carter, a member of the society’s stage crew, wrote to Buckingham Palace when he heard that the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical was among the Queen’s favourites. He was delighted when he received a reply to the invitation from the Queen’s lady-in-waiting.
Mr Carter said: “We discovered that Oklahoma! was among the Queen’s favourite musicals, and because it’s her diamond jubilee year we wrote telling her about our production.
“I have to admit it was a little tongue-in-cheek inviting her to come see our show. Not surprisingly, she had to decline, but nevertheless sent us a rather charming letter, together with a diamond jubilee souvenir picture.”
The production is May 1 to 5 at the Phoenix Theatre in Castleford. Tickets cost £10, with concessions at £8 available on May 1 and 2. To book visit www.kaos1.co.uk or call 0113 286 9653.
