Hundreds of talented performers showcased their skills as Pontefract Music Festival got under way.

Around 250 musicians will perform at venues across the town during the festival, which started last week.

The festival opened at The King’s School, Mill Hill Lane, last Friday with school choir performances.

Adult choirs took to the stage at Central Methodist Church, off Jubilee Way, during the evening.

Duets, solos and comedy songs were performed by youngsters at the church on Saturday morning and a number of open age performers appeared in the evening.

The festival will resume on Friday with instrumental performances at the church and a closing concert at the same venue will take place on Saturday from 7pm.

Norman Dale, festival committee chairman, said: “The first two days of the festival were really exciting, very well attended, so we couldn’t be more pleased.

“We’re looking forward to the weekend because we’ve had great support we’ve had.”

Organisers had feared the festival may not go ahead this year due to a lack of applicants, but it was saved after a flood of late entries last month.
