DRIVERS are being warned than part of the A1 near Pontefract will be closed overnight on Wednesday for road improvement works.
An eight-mile section of the northbound carriageway between the junction with the A639 at Barnsdale Bar and junction 33 of the M62 will be closed overnight from 8pm on Wednesday February 9 to 6am Thursday February 10.
During the closure, work will take place to repair two bridge joints, resurface sections of the carriageway and carry out general maintenance work.
Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place for northbound traffic.
The main diversion route for long distance traffic will be to exit the A1M at junction 35, travel northbound on the M18 to junction 7, then west on the M62.
Drivers wishing to travel south will rejoin the southbound A1 via M62 junction 33 and drivers wishing to travel north will rejoin the northbound A1M via M62 junction 32a.
Local traffic will be diverted off the A1 at Barnsdale Bar onto the A639 in a northerly direction until its interchange at junction 32 of the M62.
High vehicles over 4.3m will be diverted onto A6201 up to A628 and then onto junction 32 of the M62.
Traffic wishing to continue to travel north on the A1 shall be directed eastbound along the M62 and will rejoin the A1M via M62 junction 32a.
Drivers wishing to travel south will exit the M62 at junction 33 and re-join the A1 at Ferrybridge.
Sujad Hussain, Highways Agency project manager, said: “This work will provide an improved road surface for drivers.
“While the carriageway is closed we are taking the opportunity to carry out general maintenance, such as littler picking and gully clearing, in order to minimise the need for future lane closures and disruption to drivers.”
