LANDSCAPE artist Liz Salter showed her true colours and bagged a top award for her painting of wild wetland near her home in Thorpe Audlin.
The 64-year-old artist won the artist of the year award in the South Yorkshire open art competition held at Barnsley’s Copper Gallery where her painting Sudden Storm – which scooped her the top award and £450 – is displayed until May 25.
Mrs Salter, who has lived in Thorpe Audlin for 26 years, said: “It’s quite an energetic painting of Bull Carr Mires, the wetland between Thorpe Audlin and Upton, and I hope it captures the intense moment before a sudden storm.
“When people look at the painting, I want them to feel the experience of walking outside and seeing a storm coming, just waiting for the heavens to open.
“I have been painting Bull Carr Mires for about 12 years because the area is not picturesque, it’s still wild and I like that.
“I am absolutely delighted to have won and especially with a landscape painting which isn’t a very popular subject. It isn’t a very contemporary style these days, and I am very pleased it was considered.”
More than 300 artists – who could submit up to three pieces in a range of styles, including paintings, photographs and sculptures – entered the competition which was narrowed down to 75 pieces to be considered for three awards: artist of the year, friend of Cooper Gallery and emerging artist.
Mrs Salter – who studied for a master’s degree in fine art at Leeds University in 1999 – will receive her award at a ceremony at the gallery on May 19.
She added: “I entered the competition last year as well and I am very pleased to have won an award this year.
“My inspiration comes from walking in the countryside and I still walk around Thorpe Audlin area most days.
“Landscape is my preferred choice of painting and I enjoy doing it full time, even though being an artist can be an isolated job.”
Mrs Salter – who has also painted and drawn pictures of Derbyshire countryside and the River Went – has had work displayed in Five Town galleries, including the former Yorkshire Arts Circus Gallery and Bridge Arts gallery in Castleford.
