A CASTLEFORD artist has made a youngster’s day after presenting her with a painting of her dog, inspired by a photograph featured in the Express.
The two strangers were linked through their mutual love of dogs after Ann Jardine, 73, saw the picture of Rachel Dutton, 12, and her dog, Tom, featured in an article about her ambition to enter Crufts in 2009.
She painted the artistic portrait and stored it in her Castleford home before seeing Rachel featured again in the Express two weeks ago.
She said: “I have always been drawing and when I saw that picture two years ago I thought what a lovely dog, so I painted it and put it away thinking nothing more of it.
“When I opened the Express last week, who should be in the picture looking out at me but the same girl with the little dog.”
Rachel Dutton, of South View Gardens, Pontefract, was pictured with Tom after she went to visit the Ministry of Defence Animal Centre, in Melton Mowbray.
Miss Jardine said: “I was so impressed with everything that she had done, and that she clearly has a best friend in Tom, I thought to myself, don’t keep it to yourself, give it to Rachel.
“I had a dog myself, Zorro, he was a long-haired Chihuahua, and it was a picture which just came out to me, it’s beautiful.”
Rachel’s mum Christine Dutton, 53, said: “It is a lovely gesture to do that for Rachel, we will be getting a nice frame and putting it in her bedroom.”
