A large crowd turned out at the Mill Pond Stadium as Featherstone Lions staged a fundraising game on Sunday.

The match between a Lions present team and a Lions past team was staged to raise funds to send current stars Scott and Danny Glassell and Joe Fox with the England Lions team that will tour Fiji.

The present team emerged as winners, but only just, 22-18, as they held out against the past Lions side in which Simon Childs rolled back the years with a vintage display.

He was well supported by Sean Nicholson and the evergreen David Stirling while for the present team Brendon Gibbins, Josh Hardcastle and Liam Kay were the best.

Scott Glassell put the present side ahead with Ian Jackson converting. Dave Raybould raced 50 yards to put the past team on the scoresheet before Kay scored the present team’s second try.

Back came the old stagers as Danny Gilbert smashed his way over for a try goaled by Rich Frankland.

Gaz Gale’s try and Jackson’s second goal nudged the presents into the lead again, but Chris Spurr replied by racing 65 yards for a fine individual try. Hardcastle got the gamebreaking try after a fine Joe Powell run, although the final score went to the past team as Gaz Dyaes went over.

The real winner was rugby league on the day.
