FIREFIGHTERS from Castleford, Pontefract and Normanton battled a raging blaze at an industrial estate in Whitwood at the weekend.

Ten appliances were sent to fight the fire at M&S Transport, Willowbridge Way, Whitwood Enterprise Industrial Estate, at around 7am on Saturday.

Firefighters were still damping down at the scene on Monday.

A spokesman from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the roof of the building collapsed and the remains would be demolished shortly. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A resident from Whitwood Common Lane, said: “It was a massive fire. My friend woke me up and said ‘there’s a massive commotion out there’.

“There were a lot of fire engines with fire hose reels all the way down to the M62. There were plumes of smoke and when we got on the motorway, you could see it drifting across.”

Logisitics company, Kenneth Howley Transport Ltd – also based at Willowbridge Way – purchased M&S Transport earlier this year.

The Castleford company was under control of its sister company, Roy Fox Transport.

It was part of their expansion plan after enjoying a year of record turnover.

The Express was unable to contact the company for comment.
