Three boys have been left distraught after cruel thieves stole their pet tortoise.

Edward, 13, Oliver, nine, and Luke Procter, eight, were devastated to discover their beloved three-year-old pet, called Alex, had been stolen from their Kippax garden.

Their mum, Michala Procter, of Town Close View, said the boys have been upset since the pet was taken last Monday.

She said the little tortoise, which is no bigger than a pork pie, was left in an enclosure while she left the house for several hours.

But when she returned, Alex had vanished.

She said: “Edward is really upset about it, Alex was his pet and he loved him so much.

“We are desperate to get Alex back. He can’t survive without special heat lamps so we need him back.”

The theft has been reported to the police.

Alex is a Horsfield’s tortoise, and has a small white mark on his beak.

The family has had the pet since he was just six months old, and was the size of a 50p piece.

Ms Procter said the theft had come at a really bad time for the boys after two of their other pets, an eight-year-old rabbit and 19-year-old cat had died in the last month.
