A SAUCILY-named underpass in Castleford has been given a makeover after being hit by vandals.

The town’s Tickle Cock Bridge, behind Carlton Lanes shopping centre, has had its red cladding replaced with artwork depicting the town’s history in a bid to stop troublemakers leaving graffiti.

Unveiling its new look, leader of Wakefield Council Coun Peter Box, said: “I am really pleased to be unveiling the newly-designed underpass. The design represents the rich history and community spirit of Castleford.”

The underpass was originally improved through the Channel 4 television series, Kevin McCloud and the Big Town Plan in 2008 – but the red flock material attracted vandals. In 2010, the council commissioned NPS NE Ltd to regenerate the bridge using recycled glass, splashes of blue to reflect the River Aire and fish created by schoolchildren.

Coun Box added: “It is important that town centre landmarks such as this are sustainable and maintained for communities and future generations to enjoy.”
