BURNS specialist Tracy Foster has been nominated as an unsung hero in the Express’ Your Heroes awards.
Mrs Foster, 43, works as a play specialist at Pinderfields Hospital’s regional burns unit in Wakefield and for the last seven years has supported and rehabilitated dozens of children treated for burns injuries and disfigurements.
The Whitwood mum-of-three was nominated by her husband Norman for her work with Pinderfields Burns Club which arranges special camps for young burns victims.
Mrs Foster, of Bedale Road, said: “I am absolutely gobsmacked, I can’t believe I’ve been nominated.
“There is a 100 per cent demand for the work we do with these children, the camps build their confidence and allow them to socialise with others who are also learning to cope with their disfigurements.”
Mrs Foster organises three camps a year for around 170 youngsters, aged under 18, and also supports their families.
Her husband said: “Tracy is like a second mum to many of the club members and is always at the other end of her phone for any child or young person with a burns injury who needs her.
“She puts 100 per cent into the club and is always nominating the children for special bravery awards – now we think its time that Tracy won an award for everything she does.”
Mrs Foster also helps to organise and co-ordinate two family therapy weekends away for injured children and their families and various other events during the year, including an annual Christmas party.
Mr Foster added: “Every year Tracy needs to raise £20,000 a year to keep the charity going.
“She’s forever coming up with new ideas and encouraging others to get involved and half the time its Tracy herself who’s at the centre of the fundraising event.”
