Castleford Tigers players returned from their Lanzarote warm weather training camp this week with head coach Daryl Powell hailing the trip a big success.

While the rain, snow and ice hampered training at home Cas players were able to take advantage of sunny weather and top facilities as they continued their preparations for the 2016 Super League season.

“It was an excellent camp,” Powell told the Express.

“The place itself, La Santa, is perfect for sports teams so from a facilities perspective it was superb, both from a performance and a relaxation point of view.

“The players were superb in terms of their training and work ethic and they looked sharp. Obviously the weather was pretty tidy as well, which is always helpful, particularly when it’s been so wet in the UK.

“I’ve been there before a fair while ago with Leeds and they’ve developed it a little bit since then. If anything it ran smoother than I expected and from start to finish it was an absolutely spot on camp.”

The players are now adjusting back to the cold of Castleford, but are itching to get stuck into the pre-season games coming up, beginning with the trip to York tonight and the home game with Wakefield on Sunday.

Powell said: “The players are ready and I’ll be looking for performances, individual and collective and looking for some of the key things we’ve spoken about pre-season being put into practice.

“We’ll be looking to see improvement and input into the games from those things and looking to see a great attitude from both teams this weekend.

“Obviously winning the games are not of paramount importance, but it’s really important that you want to be setting up a winning mentality.

“You don’t get any points for it, but you do get confidence.

“So all-round performance and result as well would be good for us.

“We’ve talked a lot about stepping up defensively. Everybody knows what I’m after really and there’s a strong drive with the team at the moment, individually and collectively.

“Obviously Wakefield will be looking for similar things so it should be a good test for us on Sunday.”
