Bankers in Castleford celebrated 35 years on the high street by treating their customers to tea and cake.

Staff at the Yorkshire Building Society branch on Carlton Street were joined by the town’s MP, Yvette Cooper, in marking their special occasion.

The team dished out slices of cake to account holders last Thursday to celebrate more than three decades of service.

Alastair Townsley, branch manager, said: “We’re so proud to have been in Castleford for 35 years.

“It’s very much part of the society’s values to have a strong branch network and we’re happy to have been a fixture in the town centre for more than three decades, especially when so many financial institutions are closing branches and withdrawing from the high street.

Ms Cooper said: “Town centre branches are still really important for people who want to easily access their money and I hope Yorkshire Building Society will be on Carlton Street for many years yet.”
