Children with serious and complex illnesses can now benefit from a new day nursery in Hemsworth, thanks to the parents of a little girl who died from a rare genetic condition.

Steve and Maya McCormack, of Conisborough Way, Hemsworth, launched the Laila Milly Foundation when their daughter was diagnosed with Aicardi syndrome and later died a day before her first birthday.

They raised £165,000 for the nursery, which opened on Sunday as a lasting legacy of Laila Milly.

The open day was attended by community members who helped raise the cash as well as families that will benefit from the nursery, which has a sensory room, playroom and a dedicated parents’ room.

Mrs McCormack said: “I just cannot believe that the day has finally come and we are open.”

The nursery, at the back of McCormack’s opticians on Kirkby Road, will initially be open on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

The foundation has also organised a family fun day in Pontefract Park from noon to 5pm on Saturday September 13, with stalls, fairground rides and stilt walkers.
