A former Airedale High School student has died following an alleged assault outside a working men’s club.
Matthew Welford, who the Express understands was a machinist at Burberry in Castleford, died of his injuries last Tuesday after a week in a coma.
The 41-year-old suffered a serious head injury in an incident outside Garforth Country Club on Aberford Road, on the evening of June 4.
Tributes to Mr Welford on his Facebook page called him a “true Airedaler.”
It said: “RIP to an old friend, Matthew Welford, a true Airedaler who was one of a kind.”
Another said: “RIP Matt, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.”
A third said: “RIP mate, so sorry. Words cannot describe.”
West Yorkshire Police have not revealed details of the alleged attack, which led to the club being cordoned off while investigations were carried out.
Alexander John Frew, 43, of Hazelwood Avenue, Garforth, was arrested shortly after the incident and was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm.
He is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court today where the charge is to be reviewed in light of Mr Welford’s death.
The force’s homicide and major enquiry team, which is conducting the inquiry, has appealed for information.
Any witnesses are asked to call the team on 01924 334679 or to phone the non-emergency number on 101.
