Committed Ackworth fundraiser Carol Higgins will trek up Mount Kilimanjaro next year despite being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Miss Higgins, 44, signed up for the trek earlier this year to raise money for the Laila Milly Foundation.

Despite being diagnosed with bowel cancer in April, she will still take on the trek next February.

Miss Higgins said: “I was already outgoing before I was diagnosed but I really have got to live life to the max now.

“It’s just made me more determined than ever to do it now.”

Miss Higgins will take on the trek from February 14 to February 23 next year with five other fundraisers to raise money for the charity.

Laila Milly died a day before her first birthday in March 2011 after suffering from a rare genetic disorder called Aicardi syndrome.

The foundation was set up by her parents and they will open a nursery for children with similar conditions next year.

Laila’s dad Steve McCormack will also be part of the trek to raise money for the charity.

Miss Higgins said: “I have got to get fit and healthy for the trek but my surgeon told me to go for it.

“I’m also determined to doit because the charity is close to my heart as my sister had a similar condition to what Laila had.”

Miss Higgins will host several fundraisers for the trip.

An art exhibition called The Sublime Nude will be held at The Frog and Moose pub on Wakefield Road on Saturday from 1pm to 6pm.

All donations will go towards funding the trip.
