Pontefract councillor Paula Sheriff will stand as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Dewsbury and Mirfield at the General Election in 2015.

Coun Sherriff represents Pontefract North ward on Wakefield Council.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been chosen and I am really keen to campaign against the government’s continued attack on the most vulnerable in society.

“I will be staying on as a Pontefract councillor but I will obviously be campaigning in Dewsbury as well.”

Coun Sherriff will be hoping to unseat Conservative MP Simon Reevell who was elected in 2010.

She said: “We have got some really hard work to do but I’m not afraid of work and I think I show that with the work I do in Pontefract.”
