Cycle path cash given approval

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee met on Friday to discuss the £1.85m needed for the second and third phases of the new Greenway route, including a new bridge over a railway line.

Coun Matthew Morley, cabinet member for transport and highways at Wakefield Council, said: “I’m delighted the funding has been given official approval by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to bring the next stage of the Wakefield to Castleford Greenway to fruition.

“This exciting project will provide people additional opportunities to cycle and walk either for leisure or to commute to and from work.”

The scheme is part of the authority’s CityConnect project to improve cycle paths and link up towns and cities.

The fully-surfaced and purpose-built path will run alongside the River Calder.

The first phase of the project is already currently under construction and will complete the missing link between Methley Bridge at Castleford and Fairies Hill Lock. It is due to be open early in the new year.

Phase two of the scheme will provide a link between the Castleford Greenway and the Castleford to Wakefield Greenway via a new bridge over the Castleford to Leeds railway line.

Phase three will create a link from these two schemes to the Trans Pennine Trail, and Leeds and Wakefield, at Methley Junction.
