KNOTTINGLEY will be awash with festivities when dragon boat racing comes to the town to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

Osgoldcross and Elmet Rotary Club wants the town’s community groups and businesses to enter teams in a dragon boat tournament along the River Aire to raise cash for charity as part of the jubilee celebrations.

The race will take place on the river near Knottingley amphitheatre on June 4.

Chris Lovett, event organiser, said: “We want this to be a really successful and exciting day for everyone in Knottingley.

“There will be a lot of people there, and that’s just counting the teams involved, but we also think it will be a great family occasion for people to come down and support.

“There have been a number of dragon boat races across the country and the spirit and excitement at the events is phenomenal”

The entry fee is £350 per team of 17 to 20 people, who will be given basic training on the day.

Additional money can be raised through sponsorship, with 70 per cent donated to each team’s chosen charity and 30 per cent to rotary charities.

There will also be stalls, entertainment and refreshments at amphitheatre, near Giggs Bridge, on the day.
