A thief in a balaclava attacked a driver with a metal pole before stealing cash from his van.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses after the victim was approached and threatened by a man while loading his vehicle following a cash collection in Castleford.

The male driver was then assaulted by the suspect, who made off with a cash box and escaped in a waiting black VW Golf.

The victim received minor injuries in the incident, which took place in California Drive at Whitwood at around 4.40pm yesterday.
The getaway vehicle, registration VX06 TLN, was later recovered in a burnt out state on Wood View Avenue.

A police spokesman said: “The suspect was wearing a balaclava and witnesses described the Golf’s driver as a mixed race male, bald with a long beard and stocky build.

“Anyone who saw the robbery, the Golf in the area shortly before or after the incident in the Castleford area, or the car being set on fire, is asked to call Wakefield CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
