Motorists in Castleford face eight weeks of delays while gas mains are replaced.

Northern Gas Networks will start the £90,000 scheme to replace around 610m of gas mains on Monday, January 5.

Work will be carried out one street at a time starting on Ambler Street, then Pretoria Street, Smawthorne Lane before the company finishes the scheme on Lower Oxford Street.

Ambler Street will be closed from January 12 to 26 and parking will be suspended on Lower Oxford Street from January 19.

Alternative parking will be provided for residents in a car park on Vickers Street.

John Pickering, customer operations area manager, said: “We have planned our work closely with the council, to minimise disruption to both residents and motorists. However, it has been necessary to put into place a number of traffic restrictions to allow the work to progress.”

Temporary bus stops will also be set up while the works are carried out.

Mr Pickering added: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding.”
