Firefighters rescued two elderly care home residents after a fire in the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Wakefield and Ossett were called to The Hollies, at Eastmoor Road, Wakefield, at around 12.30am.

A fire had broken in a first floor bedroom and crews had to rescue two elderly residents, as the smoke was too thick for staff to get to them.

One resident was bed bound and had to be carried down on a mattress. Staff had managed to move other residents to a safer part of the building.

The two rescued residents were checked over and had suffered minor smoke inhalation, but no major injuries.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said the fire did not spread, but caused damage to the bedroom and corridor which were both heavily smoke logged.

Four breathing appartus wearers tackled the blaze with two hose reels. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Crews cleared the scene at around 2.30am.
