WEEKS of professional coaching paid off for a tag rugby team from Castleford’s Three Lane Ends Community Primary School when they were named champions of a Leeds Carnegie schools tournament.
The team of year five pupils played against two teams from Castleford Ackton Pastures Primary School and two from the town’s Park Junior School in the tournament at Smawthorne Rugby Club.
Leeds Carnegie coaches held six weeks of tag rugby training at the school and then organised the tournament so pupils could put their practice to good use.
Nicky Peaker, the school’s junior play leader, said: “Everyone enjoyed the training, especially the girls. With us being in Castleford, many of the boys already play rugby outside of school so it was nice for the girls to get involved and have a go.
“They were over the moon to have done so well. The team spirit was fantastic, they played well and encouraged each other.”
