A Featherstone couple who stage an annual Christmas lights display to raise cash for Pontefract’s Prince of Wales Hospice will switch on their festive show for the final time tonight (Friday).

Jon and Jennifer Sharpe’s house and garden has been lit up at Christmas for the past 20 years with a display including moving illuminated reindeer, penguins, other festive characters, a laser display and sound and lights displays. It draws hundreds of visitors from across Yorkshire each festive season and has raised around £13,000 for the hospice in the last five years.

The couple decided to make this their last year when semi-retired electrical engineer Mr Sharpe, 74, had a CT scan that detected a problem with his lung and cancer was suspected. However, he received the cancer all-clear on Wednesday.

His wife Jennifer, 65, said this year’s lights would be their last and the “biggest and best” display to raise more cash for the hospice.

Mrs Sharpe said: “I admire Jon for getting on with it, He is determined it will be a wonderful spectacle for people.”

The 30,000 bulbs will be switched on by Jon and Jennifer’s four-year-old grandson Aidan at 5pm on Friday December 19 at 7 Dales, Featherstone Lane, North Featherstone, WF7 6AH.

They will be on every night from 5pm to 10pm until January 1.

A donation box will be left in the garden.
