SAFETY was a top priority for inquisitive youngsters visiting Pontefract Fire Station last week.
Children from Holy Family and St Michael’s J&I School in Pontefract and Knottingley’s England Lane J&I School visited the Stuart Road station as part of Wakefield Council’s Safety Rangers in Action programme.
The scheme is aimed at helping pupils think about how to stay safe by replicating real-life situations, such as escaping from a fire at a sleepover.
Kevin Jordan, assistant headteacher at Holy Family, said: “The children had a wonderful day and the fire station were really good at showing them around and explaining how they can help with their own safety.
“It really bought to mind all the dangers around them, especially if there’s a fire in the home, they know the safest way to evacuate and know the numbers for the fire service. It really helped them.”
The council is working with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, West Yorkshire Police and British Transport Police as part of a regular programme of safety events in schools across the district.
