Giving the gift of Christmas

A Normanton rotarian has been collecting toys and gifts for under privileged children across the world.

Robert Burgess organised an appeal to collect decorated shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, run by Samaritan’s Purse.

He collected 154 decorated shoeboxes, as well as three large bags full of festive gifts, thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Normanton members, as well as local individuals, churches and businesses.

He was also given £335 towards the costs incurred by Samaritan’s Purse in transporting the gifts to children in different countries.

The majority of the money (£258) was donated by engineering company S E W Eurodrive, of Trident Park, Normanton.

The firm’s staff organised a number of fundraising activities in support of the campaign.

The items were stored at Mr Burgess’ funeral directors business on Market Place, Normanton, before being collected and delivered to Samaritan’s Purse by fellow rotarians.

It was the tenth year that Mr Burgess has organised an appeal for the charity, and other similar schemes such as the Rotary Shoebox Appeal.

The initiative collects new products for youngsters of all ages and distributes them to thousands of children who would otherwise have received nothing.

Visit www.samaritans-purse.org.uk for more information about how to donate. The website also allows people to pack a shoebox online and donate it to a child in need for £18.
