LIONS and Lioness clubs across the Five Towns sprang into to action to buy a new power springboard for members of a Featherstone gymnastics club.
Pontefract Lioness club, Castleford and Pontefract District Lions club and Featherstone Lions club raised £450 to buy the athletic equipment for the Jester’s Sports Acro Club which practices at Featherstone Technology College.
Mel Millard, the club’s head coach, said: “Everyone at the club greatly appreciates the kind donation made by the Lions clubs.
“We only had a very basic springboard, and as the gymnasts are so rapidly improving, better equipment is needed to match their skills.
“Two girls from our club recently entered a schools tumbling competition and are now through to the British finals.
“The power springboard will enable us to improve their tumbling skills and we also hope to use the springboard at outdoor galas and displays this summer.”
The Lions clubs raised the cash by holding a variety of events across the Five Towns over the Christmas period and presented the board to the Pontefract Road club at a presentation in March.
Jeanette Morgan, activities chairman of Pontefract Lioness Club, said: “We were very happy to help out the club because they do all their own fundraising to pay for equipment.
“They approached us and said they were struggling to raise funds to meet the needs of their growing group and the number of performances they had been asked to do.
“We thought it was an excellent idea to buy them the new springboard because it is a fantastic club which keeps children off the streets and gives them something to focus on.”
