An artistic youngster’s striking design shone through hundreds of entries to win Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette’s Cooper’s annual Christmas Card competition.

Redhill Junior School pupil Heidi Maw’s drawing of Santa in his sleigh flying over Pontefract Castle was chosen as the design for Ms Cooper’s cards which will be sent out to more than 1,000 people across the area and country.

Youngsters at schools across Pontefract, Castleford and Normanton worked on designing a card for Ms Cooper during the past few weeks.

Ms Cooper visited the Stansfield Drive school on Friday to crown Heidi the winner of the competition and present her with a prize.

Ms Cooper said: “Every year I invite schools to take part in the competition and the pictures that the children design are fantastic.

“It’s always a tough choice and I’d have loved to pick them all.

“But I chose Heidi’s picture because it is so lively and had local landmarks like Pontefract Castle on it as well as a big Father Christmas off to deliver his presents.

“It’s been made up into a card and I’ll be sending it out to friends, family and others round here and across the country.”
