HIGHWAYMAN Dick Turpin accompanied pupils from Castleford’s St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School on their victorious march to class after they won Wakefield Council’s historical fancy dress competition.
Actor David Eliot Cooper dressed up as the infamous 18th century figure and walked the masked children through the Valley Gardens to the Pontefract Road school.
The competition, part of the council’s Walk to School week, was organised and judged by Johnny Gibson from the council’s road safety team and St Joseph’s children won with their eclectic range of historical characters, including Queen Victoria.
Mr Gibson said: “I think holding competitions like this is vitally important and helps promote healthier lifestyles for the children.”
Annie McNally, headteacher, said: “Having Dick Turpin come to walk the pupils to school was a fantastic and safe start to the day.
“I hope more families will be encouraged to park further away from school, enjoy a stroll through the park and help to ease traffic congestion at opening and closing times.”
