Calligrapher Terry Sykes can claim to have the best handwriting in the world after winning an international competition.

Terry, 75, chairman of Pontefract Calligraphers, won first prize in the over 65s category of the USA-based World Handwriting Contest’s artistic handwriting section.

He was also named overall champion for all sections in the competition.

It is the second time Terry has entered the competition, coming second in the same category last year.

He said: “I was really thrilled to win, and receiving the second certificate was a lovely surprise.”

Terry had to complete a test piece, sent out by the handwriting contest organisers, which he wrote in a combination of his own writing style and a flourished italic style.

He added: “Our tutor thought it looked attractive so that’s what I used.

“It was similar to the style I used in last year’s competition, but with a few little changes here and there.”
