OLYMPIC gymnast and diver Helen Galashan inspired Pontefract youngsters to get involved in a sports volunteering scheme.

The international silver and bronze medallist gave a motivational speech to students at NEW College last week to encourage them to join the Sport Makers scheme.

Her presentation included footage of her career highlights and achievements as well as the importance of support from volunteers in becoming successful.

Tom Shepherd, head of physical education at NEW College, said: “It was an inspirational and motivational talk. She put a lot of emphasis on how, if it hadn’t have been for volunteers, she wouldn’t have had the opportunities and guidance to be able to compete at such a high level.”

Sport Makers events provide information on how to get sport or activity sessions going with friends, colleagues and neighbours in the community.

Volunteers who complete ten hours of volunteering before the end of May will be entered into a draw to win Olympic tickets.
