Inspirational pensioner Hazel Richardson was the star of the show at an awards night recognising the hard-work of people in their communities.

Mrs Richardson, 67, won two awards at the Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) Love Where You Live awards regional heat for the Pontefract and Castleford area.

She scooped one prize for working with older people after she set up a cold calling control zone on the Warwick Estate in the town.

Mrs Richardson, who is also co-ordinator of the neighbourhood watch for the estate, also came runner up in the good neighbour category and Hawthorne Avenue, where she lives, won the award for best neighbourhood.

She said: “I was speechless when I won the awards. I did not expect it at all.

“I don’t do any of what I do for the recognition. I do it because I want to because I care for people.

“But the fact that people think what I do is worthy of any type of award is great and I am very grateful to receive it.”

Mrs Richardson has lived in Knottingley for 23 years and set up the cold calling zone on the estate earlier this year.

It prevents salesmen from knocking on residents’ doors.

Mrs Richardson said: “I think the estate had a problem with cold callers before I got involved but the zone just makes people feel a little bit more secure.

“These people that come around knocking on doors can be quite intimidating so it just offers residents a little bit of security.”

Mrs Richardson will now go on to the grand final for the Wakefield district in November.

She also thanked everyone who had helped her.

Residents can vote for their winners in each category from tomorrow.
