Former Pontefract NEW College deputy principal Julian Appleyard is celebrating after his current college was named top of the national league tables.

Mr Appleyard, 43, a former Pontefract Rugby Club captain, is now principal at Rochdale Sixth Form College.

The college beat more than 400 further education colleges across the country to come out on top of the A-level league tables.

Mr Appleyard, who still lives in Pontefract, said: “Despite the two-hour commute each day, this achievement has certainly made all the hard work and driving worthwhile.

“To attain the number one spot in the whole country with reference to the progress a student makes is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement and I’m delighted to be part of it.”
