Karting teens beat police in track racing

Teens came out on top when they went wheel to wheel with police leaders in a go karting championship.

The youngsters, all members of Pontefract Badgers Karting Club, took to the tracks with Wakefield District Commander Chief Superintendent Mabs Hussain and five other police bosses.

And they stormed into the top four places, taking victory in the ‘just-for-fun’ competition.

The Badgers was formed by police, the Monkhill and Ladybalk Tenants and Residents Association, and partners at the Raceway Karting Track on Skinner Lane in 2014. It teaches young people basic mechanics, driving skills and team work.

Chief Inspector Richard Close, head of neighbourhood policing said: “Initiatives such as this are absolutely proven to work at reducing anti-social behaviour in communities and in improving our engagement as with local youngsters.”

Ch Supt Hussain added: “We were delighted to accept the challenge and put our own skills behind the wheel to the test to support the young people involved.”
