Firefighters in Castleford had to rescue an 11-year-old boy who fell down a manhole on Tuesday night.

Crews from the town’s station were called to an area of waste land behind Wakefield College’s Skills Xchange campus, off Leeds Road, in Glass Houghton at around 8pm.

A fire service spokesman said the boy had been playing with a girl on the land but got his legs trapped in a 4ft-deep manhole.

He added the girl went to seek help and tell the boy’s parents.

The fire service attended the scene and rescued the boy.

The ambulance was also called to the incident.

The spokesman said the boy was not hurt but just needed help getting out of the manhole.
