‘£135m scheme for stadium is not welcome’

People living next to a proposed £135m development, including a new Castleford Tigers stadium, have stepped up their fight against the plans.

Lateral Property Group submitted a planing application for the scheme to Wakefield Council last week.

The Five Towns Park would feature the stadium, a new foodstore, petrol station, high-quality shops, and a country park on land just off the M62 at junction 32.

But people living on Stainburn Avenue and Spittal Hardwick Lane have objected to the plans saying it would lead to an increase in traffic.

Paul Clifford, 61, of Stainburn Avenue, said: “We are appalled by the plans and we are absolutely dead set against them.

“We will keep up the fight right up to when the application is discussed at a planning meeting.”

Mr Clifford said that people living close to the site also fear the development will not have enough parking spaces for the number of visitors it will attract.

He added: “The traffic issue is a major concern. We are already faced with horrendous traffic problems in the area because of Junction 32 Outlet Village and Xscape so this development would make it much worse.

“People will say we’ve got a biased view because we are directly involved but we can’t see a single positive about these plans.

“There are alternative sites which are far better.”

Another resident, of Spittal Hardwick Lane, who did not want to be named, said: “A lot of people who live around the site are unhappy because the development would be built on green belt land.

“There is also the redevelopment of the former Prince of Wales Colliery site on the other side of the motorway so the traffic will be a nightmare.”

Philip Lunn, managing director of Lateral Property Group, said: “We are making a multi-million pound investment into the road network with a new junction layout at Park Road which will increase capacity and provide an easy entrance and exit for visitors to our development.

“We will also ensure that residents can easily get in and out.”
