96 new homes for Redcats site ?

A decision about plans to build almost 100 new homes on the former Redcats site will be made next week.

Bridge Homes LLP, a joint venture between the council and Wakefield and District Housing (WDH), wants to build 96 houses and bungalows at the site on Horbury Road previously occupied by the mail order firm.

Planning documents put forward to be developer say the homes would “increase choice and variety and help to accelerate delivery of housing in the Wakefield district which, in line with all the other authorities in the region, is currently below the identified need.”

Sixty-eight of the properties would be for sale and 28 “affordable” homes – 30 per cent of the units on site – are due to be rented for shared ownership.

Three objections have been made to the plans.

One reads: “The area is already subject to significant congestion, more queuing traffic will make existing poor air quality worse.

“Wakefield residents have a lower life expectancy than the England average and deaths linked to polluted areas in Wakefield are the highest in Yorkshire and Humberside.”

The site is 1.9 miles east of the city centre, close to the City of Wakefield Golf Course.

The committee will consider the application, which has been recommended by officers for approval, on Thursday, April 14.

In November 2013 Wakefield Council’s cabinet approved setting up the joint venture with WDH. An agreement was made that the partnership would buy, the Redcats site, land at St Swithun’s Drive and land at Standbridge Lane, Kettlethorpe from the council.
