Creating a new place to play for children

Work to transform a run down play area for children in Castleford has begun.

Builders and diggers moved on to the Three Lane Ends park to start the £46,0000 upgrade earlier this week.

They are working to create a new securely-enclosed infant area with a play unit, slide, swings, rocker and seating.

And they will also install equipment for children aged up to 12, including a climbing frame, ball games area, basketball hoops and target games.

Coun Peter Box, Wakefield Council leader and councillor for Altofts and Whitwood, said: “I am pleased that work has now started on site to create a great new area for children to play at Three Lane Ends.

“Local councillors saw that the play area desperately needed updating and after consulting with the community we knew it was also a priority for local people.”

Coun Box met with children from Three Lane Ends primary school earlier this year so that they could help to shape plans for the new play area.

They were shown ideas for the site and asked to share their thoughts on what they would like to see.

Year 5 class teacher James Turner said around 90 pupils had their say.

He said: “The children enjoyed being able to hear about the ideas for the new park.

“Overall there was a positive response and the children liked the sound of the plans.”

Coun Box said work to transform the ‘neglected’ play area and provide new facilities was ‘long overdue’.

He said: “The new design and equipment, chosen with help from local children, will create a fun place that many children will be able to enjoy.”

Work on the play area is expected to be completed this summer.
