A golfing foursome will play a dawn-till-dusk marathon challenge to raise money for the Prince of Wales Hospice.

The team from Normanton Golf Club wanted to help support the Pontefract hospice for two reasons.

The hospice on Halfpenny Lane is the chosen charity of golf club captain Martin Spragg and it has also helped to care for the family and friends of some members.

Lee Slater, who is taking park in the challenge next Thursday, said: “I lost my friend Luke Crossley and uncle Geoff Smith last year. Both received care at the Prince of Wales Hospice.”

He will team up with fellow members Bruce Evans, Andy Booth and Ross Groom for four rounds in a day at Normanton Golf Club, off Aberford Road, Wakefield.

Hospital worker Mr Slater added: “We aim to start at quarter past four in the morning when there will be just enough light to see a golf ball. We think we will finish around 9.30pm or 10pm.”

He estimates the first round will take about three or three-and-a-half hours but they will be back on the course again after a 15-minute break for breakfast.

The golfers have set themselves a target of raising £500 but Mr Slater thinks they may exceed that.

The 29-year-old who works in the operating theatres at Leeds General Infirmary, has been sponsored by his colleagues and golf club members.

The team has also had help from hospice fundraiser Amanda Jubb, who will be taking a couple of hours off to support them during their marathon game.

But they won’t be putting their feet up for long.

Mr Slater added: “Believe it or not we are playing in an open at Normanton Golf Club on the Saturday. Teams are coming from Bridlington and all over the county.
