Divers recovered the body of man in the Knottingley and Goole Canal in Ferrybridge.

Specialist underwater rescue teams, the police helicopter and fire crews from Pontefract and Castleford were called to Fishergate after reports of a man falling into water near the Golden Lion pub at around 12.13am on Tuesday.

A body was recovered from the canal later that day.

DS Mark Hargreaves, from West Yorkshire Police, said: “Police searching the canal close to Fishergate, Ferrybridge have recovered a man’s body.

“Officers from the regional underwater search unit recovered the body of a 34-year-old local man on Tuesday afternoon.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

“The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to be opened in due course.”
