Service with a smile is the key to success for a Castleford DIY store which has been ranked in the top 20 in the country.
Lindley’s DIY Store opened its doors on Sagar Street in the town 23 years ago.
The shop, run by Bob Lindley, has been voted the 16th best DIY store in the UK in an Alliance and Leicester poll - beating DIY giant Wickes.
Mr Lindley, 65, said: “It was a great surprise but we are very proud of it.
“A sales representative came in to see us because we hadn’t heard about it and when he told us I just fobbed it off and thought they’ll do anything for a sale.
“We didn’t hear anything from anybody about the poll until then so none of us believed it.”
Mr Lindley’s wife, Jean, and daughter Andria Lindley-Ward also work at the store, which offers thousands of DIY and gardening products. Mr Lindley added: “There are no secrets to being successful.
“Good value on a good selection of products and good customer service are the keys.
“We always interact with customers and I think that’s what has got us so high up in the poll.”
Mr Lindley hopes to retire later this year and pass the business onto his daughter Andria.
He added: “I think it’s great to work with your family and I’m looking forward to retirement later.
“I’ll probably be passing the shop onto my daughter but I know I’ll be leaving the business in capable hands.”
As well beating Wickes in the top 20 poll, Lindley’s also came just four places below Homebase.
