Mike Tomlinson – whose late wife Jane raised more than £1.5m for charity – was a guest speaker at a special International Women’s Day celebration at Pontefract NEW College.

Mr Tomlinson spoke about his wife’s fundraising achievements after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She died in 2007.

Pauline Hagen, college principal, said: “Mike gave a very special and inspirational speech.

“The day was a whole-college celebration. We had a range of activities and students joined in a healthy debate about feminism.”

Angela Towers from the No More Page Three campaign, Kate Bratt-Farrar from Leeds Women’s Aid and Gemma Yates from Hepworth Gallery were also among the speakers.

Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper hosted a debate on the relevance of feminism in today’s society.

The college also put on sports sessions run by England rugby league international player Lindsey Anfield.

Ms Hagen added: “The day was action packed and I don’t think the students feet touched the ground. They loved it and I think they were all - both male and female - inspired.”
