Police and businesses in Pontefract will work together to tackle shop thefts in the town during the run up to Christmas.
Pontefract and Knottingley neighbourhood policing team (NPT) is encouraging shops in Pontefract town centre to work together with police to tackle the rising level of shoplifting.
Sgt Alan Studd of the NPT said he was looking at a range of options to help businesses prevent thefts.
He said: “It’s about working with the shops themselves and getting some good ideas from them too.”
Sgt Studd plans to hold a meeting with businesses to discuss ways to deal with the problem, including setting up ‘mini-cocoons’ of shops which give each other support, look at improved shop design, better use of CCTV and increased use of Shopwatch.
He added: “We’re also planning to send letters to known offenders to let them now if they are caught shoplifting we will send them to court and actively seek ASBOs barring them shops.”
